Why eat Organic food?
This is a common question and perhaps the best way to start to answer is to look at what organic food is. Foods that are labelled organic must meet strict EU standards and comply with inspection regulations. Briefly, not only should the farming methods operate as naturally as possible, but it should also minimise the impact on the environment. So that means very strict limits on the use of chemical, synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. It also advocates the use of plants and animals that have natural disease resistance and are adapted to the local environmental conditions. For those that already eat organic food, they will say that they don’t want to be exposed to powerful and often toxic chemicals (pesticides are used to kill something), and the food tastes better. But now there is evidence to support these beliefs. The Newcastle University led study reviewed hundreds of studies published over the last few years, which gave them the a much largest evidence base of its kind on which to base their conclusions and they came to some interesting findings detailed below-Organic foods and foods produced from them have MORE desirable antioxidants/(poly)phenolics and LESS of the potentially harmful cadmium which has a set maximum safe level in foodNitrogen levels accumulate in plants due to high nitrogen fertiliser regimes and are linked to certain cancers- these were significantly lower in organic foods.Synthetic pesticide residues are four times higher in crops from conventional farming methods, and it’s higher in fruit than vegetables. Who wants to eat chemicals that kill plants and other animals? If you are concerned about your food and where it comes from and the impact on your health, what does this mean for you? Fruit and vegetables are important in your diet and no one is suggesting that you cut down, but perhaps switching to organic foods wherever possible is a start. Switching to organic fruit and vegetables is equivalent to one or two additional portions a day because of the higher nutritional density and those that eat organic say it tastes so much better! Try growing your own, even a little may help.As with all studies the more information there is the more reliable the results, so there is more to be done .
